Volatile Mexico striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored twice as America trounced Chiapas 5-0 in the Mexican championship at the weekend.

With the brace, Blanco, who appears to have rediscovered his confidence under Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker, took his total to eight goals in the championship.

Argentine Hugo Castillo also helped himself to two goals and German Villa completed the scoring for Mexico's richest club.

America, who are slowly recovering from a dreadful start, are fourth in Group Three but still have chances of making the knockout stages.

UNAM coach Hugo Sanchez was sent off for dissent as his team scored twice in the last five minutes to beat Toluca 3-2 and hand Brazil's Ricardo Ferreti a losing debut as the Red Devils's coach. Ticketmaster

Jaime Lozano scored in the 85th minute and Ismael Iniguez struck two minutes later as the Pumas stayed top of group three.

"The players' effort was fantastic," the outspoken Sanchez said.

"Our opponents played cautiously, waiting for us to make mistakes."

Brazilian Alex Fernandes scored both goals as champions Monterrey, led by former Argentina coach and captain Daniel Passarella, were held 2-2 at home by Pachuca, while Gabriel Alvez scored both goals for the visitors. Ticketmaster

A late penalty converted by Sigifrido Mercado gave Puebla a 1-1 draw with Guadalajara and deprived Dutchman Hans Westerhoff a win on his debut in charge of the visitors, who had gone ahead through Omar Bravo in the first half.
