Nigerian champions Enyimba missed an opportunity to claim the last place in the African Champions League semi-finals when they lost 2-1 to Simba of Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam on Sunday.
Enyimba needed just a draw to become the fourth and final side to qualify for the semis but were beaten by the hosts, who still have a chance of edging out the Nigerians for a place in the last four.
Enyimba can still
make sure if they draw at home in their final match against group leaders Ismailia
in two weeks.
Emmanuel Gabriel scored the opener for Simba on 24 minutes but David Tyakase
equalised nine minutes before the break.
Captain Boniface Pawasa grabbed the winner 20 minutes into the second half, leaving Simba needing to win away at ASEC Abidjan of the Ivory Coast in their final march while hoping Enyimba lose at home to Ismailia on October 19. Ticketmaster
Group B leaders Esperance were held to a 1-1 draw away at Canon Yaounde of Cameroon in Douala where Mourad Melki's equaliser was his fifth goal of this year's competition.
Esperance, who
were the first side to qualify for the semi-finals, can still lose out on top
sport in the group but only if they lose at home to USM Alger in Tunis on October
18.
