Tottenham Hotspur beat sorry Everton 3-0 at White Hart Lane on to claim their first league win since sacking manager Glenn Hoddle.

Fredi Kanoute's capped his 100th Premiership appearance with a marvellous long-range blast just before half-time, and goals in quick succession by Gustavo Poyet and Robbie Keane just after the break did the damage for Spurs.

Everton then threw on England starlet Wayne Rooney to try and restore some pride, but it was too little, too late after Tottenham's strikes left the Toffees shellshocked.

Spurs pressed forward in the opening exchanges but were unable to fashion a dangerous opportunity.

Everton missed their first-half chances, Steve Watson heading just over and Duncan Ferguson driving a free-kick into the wall.

Keane then missed a double chance for the home side. Nigel Martyn kept out the Irishman's sidefooted shot after he slipped past Joseph Yobo, and when Kanoute crossed the spilt ball for Keane at the back post, he could only divert it over.

Two minutes before the interval, Kanoute broke the deadlock with a wonderful strike. Ticketmaster

After Yobo headed Thomas Gravesen's corner wide, Kasey Keller launched the ball upfield where Kanoute won the header. Poyet brought it under control and nodded it back into the Frenchman's path.

From 35 yards, Kanoute blasted an unstoppable shot that dipped into the top left-hand corner.

And right after the break, Poyet and Keane put the game beyond doubt with two quickfire strikes.

Just 45 seconds in, Darren Anderton received a right-wing throw by Stephen Carr before clipping a ball into the box for Uruguayan Poyet who stooped and diverted it past Martyn.

Then two minutes later, Keane finally opened his Premiership account this season with an assured finish. Ticketmaster

Anderton was again the supplier as he played Keane in. David Unsworth tangled with the Irish striker but failed to clear the danger. Keane got the better of him and slid the ball to the right of Martyn to make it 3-0.

Everton boss David Moyes gave Rooney a second-half run-out ahead of England's Euro 2004 crunch match in Turkey on October 11, but Spurs were cruising and claimed their first Premiership win under caretaker manager David Pleat.
